Floating Plants

Floating Plants float on the surface of the pond with their roots drawing nutrients directly from the water. They offer great shade to the pond and cover for your fish.

Floating plants help keep water clear and free of algae. They reduce the amount of light that gets to the water and remove nitrates essential for algae growth. They help protect fish from predators such as herons by providing cover and the roots are a great place for fish and wildlife to lay their eggs. They spread by sending runners to form young plants. Ideally one to two thirds of the ponds surface should be covered with floating plants and/or lily pads.

We stock seven varieties of floating plant, two of which are native to the UK. Amongst the remaining five is the hardy strain of Trappa natans which are native to Europe. These do require a good summer to survive through a UK winter, but are very popular being a lovely addition to a water feature.

Due to the seasonal nature of the plants, availability changes on a weekly basis. If what you require is not currently available, please check back soon as varieties are at their best at differing points of the year.

Do Floating Plants Help with Algae?

Floating plants can be an effective natural method for reducing algae growth in ponds, as these plants compete directly with algae for nutrients. By rapidly absorbing these nutrients, floating plants starve algae of the resources they need to grow, thereby naturally suppressing unwanted green growth and helping to maintain clearer, healthier water conditions.

Do Floating Plants Oxygenate the Water?

Yes, floating plants play an important role in water oxygenation through their photosynthetic processes. During daylight hours, these plants release oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis, directly contributing to oxygen levels in the water. Additionally, their extensive root systems provide surface area for beneficial bacteria and microorganisms, which further support oxygen exchange. This natural oxygenation method is particularly beneficial in ponds and water gardens.

How Do I Keep Floating Plants Away from My Filter?

To prevent floating plants from clogging your filter, you can employ several techniques. Creating physical barriers using mesh nets or floating plant rings can effectively contain and control plant movement. Some water gardeners use custom-made floating barriers to create designated zones for these plants.
