UV Clarifier FAQs

What exactly is a UV clarifier?

A UV clarifier uses ultraviolet light to eliminate harmful micro-organisms and control green water development and algae growth in pond water. It works by passing water through a UV lamp, which destroys algae cells, bacteria, and other potentially troublesome organisms that can otherwise cause issues with water aesthetics and health problems for pond life.

Do UV clarifiers benefit pond health?

In short, yes. Water clarity and health is improved when using a UV clarifier, as the treatment process will substantially reduce potentially harmful elements contained within the water itself, by destroying algae and harmful bacteria without the user having to resort to applying chemical treatments in most cases. This in turn will create an aquatic environment more conducive to both the flora and fauna contained within it.

Are UV clarifiers safe for fish and other pond life?

Yes, UV clarifiers are safe for fish and aquatic life if installation procedures are followed correctly. The UV light only affects the tiny organisms that pass through the device, leaving fish, plants, and specifically beneficial bacteria unharmed. They do not alter water chemistry or introduce potentially harmful substances, making them a more environmentally friendly and safe option than some alternatives. How often do UV lamp bulbs need to be replaced?

You may need to check the documentation provided to you by the manufacturer, as UV bulbs will diminish in effectiveness over time. The typical recommendation however is that bulbs should be replaced approximately every 12 months; UV bulbs have an approximate life of 9,000 hours which equates to slightly over one full year of continual usage.

Can UV clarifiers completely eliminate all algae in a pond?

UV clarifiers are highly effective at controlling algae, but if you’re using them in isolation eliminating 100% of the algae in your pond may not be possible – this is especially true if there is a large volume of algae or green water in the pond. In this instance, other pond management strategies may need to be used. Have a look at our Green Water Solutions article if you need more ideas!

What type of UV clarifier will I need for my pond?

The appropriate UV clarifier model and size you’ll need will depend on things like your pond's volume, and its unique conditions. Factors to consider may include:

  • Total water volume
  • Pond depth, length and width
  • What kind of fish are in the pond – depending on the fish you have, they may require more stringent water quality management than others to stay healthy.
  • Sunlight exposure

Most manufacturers of UV clarifiers will provide sizing guides, to help you select the most appropriate unit for your specific pond. If you’re not sure of the specific volume of your pond, our handy calculator can help you to work it out.

Can UV clarifiers help reduce pond maintenance time?

Certainly - by preventing algae growth and reducing harmful micro-organisms and bacteria in the water itself, UV clarifiers significantly decrease overall pond maintenance time by reducing the necessity of certain (though not all) maintenance activities. For example:

  • Manual algae removal is reduced, as the clarifier removes most of it
  • Less time is spent scrubbing pond surfaces and walls to get algae off
  • Manual water treatments will be needed less often
