Filtoclear Features
Filtration: The Filtoclear comes in 6 different models, which means that they can cope with established nature ponds up to 30m² (30000 Litres) a pond with normal fish (orfe, goldfish, tench, rudd, shubunkin etc) up to 15m³ (15000 Litres) and koi ponds between 1.5 - 7.5m³ (1500 Litres - 7500 Litres). Inside the Filtoclear there are two forms of filtration, the mechanical filtration, this is mainly the job of the blue foams, these foams stop the big bits of sediment and debris that your pump sends to the filter. The red foams inside your filter are finer, they will still stop debris, but as they have less contact with the main flow of water inside the filter they harbour 1000's of bacteria that contribute to the nitrogen cycle within your pond. As with all modern pressurised filter systems the Filtoclear incorporates a powerful built in UVC light, this flocculates (clumps together) algae (which makes your water green and sometimes pea soup like), by damaging the outer cell of the algae with the UV light. This then allows the once too small algae cells to clump together meaning that they can then be filtered out of your pond. The Filtoclear also incorporates a clever light function to allow you to see when the UV bulb is on and working (UV bulbs usually have a maximum operating life of around 9000 hours). This is all backed up with Oase's clear water guarantee which means if the products fail to live up to their recommendations you will receive a refund.
Easy Cleaning: The patented cleaning system that Oase have designed for the Filtoclear makes cleaning unbelievably easy. The pollutant indicators show when the system is running slower, the green paddle o-ring that is visible will move down indicating a restriction in flow. This indicates that the foams are becoming dirty and need cleaning. Most pressurised filter systems do come with a backflush system, the idea behind this is that you turn a paddle switch, which then directs the water flow the wrong way round the system to flush out all the debris trapped by the foams. What sets the Filtoclear apart from its rivals though is the cleaning handle, this can be pulled up and down which squeezes the foams, this helps clean the foams even better and more thoroughly than many other pressurised filters on the market. The clear hosetails mean that when you're operating the cleaning handle and backflush you can see when the water starts to run clear and that the cleaning process has finished. The cleaning process is as follows:
- Turn the system off, pump and UVC.
- Remove the blanking cap from the sludge hosetail and turn the paddle switch to the plant/garden setting.
- Attach the hosing and direct this to either a drain or garden plants (the sludge and debris that come from the dirty filter make a great fertilizer for plants)
- Turn your pump back on and allow the water to start pumping through the unit, then squeeze the cleaning handle up and down allowing the unit to fully clean. Continue until the water begins to run clear from the sludge outlet.
- Once the water is clear, turn the pump off, re-attach the blanking cap and switch the filter back to the pond/fish setting. Turn the pump and UVC back on and your filter is now clean.
Easy To Install And Position
Probably the main reason for people buying pressurised filter units is because they can be buried up to the lid, so they can be hidden in the garden. This helps people who simply have no room to hide a box filter, and gives an option of a more aesthetically pleasing set up, so they don't have to have a filter sat on the edge of their pond. The Oase Filtoclear can be used to go to a head height of approximately 2m, this is more than capable of powering most garden pond waterfalls. Due to these units being pressurised they can be placed below the water level, this is particularly helpful if you have a raised pond. The general way you would set up a pond with a pressurised filter can be seen below.
In the below pictures you can see the three symbols that appear on the Filtoclear. The first picture is the sludge drain, this is where the water comes out when you're cleaning your Filtoclear. The second picture shows fish, this outlet goes to your pond, and the final picture shows a pump and this is where you put the hose from your pump to.

Changing the foams in your Filtoclear
Changing the foams within the Oase Filtoclear is really simple. Once you have removed the clip from the unit itself use the cleaning handle to pull the foams and the lid away from the body. You will see the bottom plate has two screws as shown below, these both need to be removed and are Philips head fittings. Once the screws are removed, the bottom plate will slide off, this will allow you to slide the foams out, you will then be able to give the unit a good rinse with a hose pipe and clean the upstand as shown in the first picture. Once you are happy all the debris has been removed, fit your new foams and your filter will be ready for use. The foams will need replacing approximately every 2 years, you will be able to tell when they need to be replaced as they will have become misshaped and will no longer fit flush with the body of your Oase Filtoclear.
