There are many species of pond fish available. Some pond owners prefer brightly coloured goldfish, koi or orfe to stand out in their pond, others choose native species to inhabit a natural looking pond.Pond fish tend to be fairly placid and there isn’t much conflict between species. The main consideration when adding fish should be whether pond is compatible for the type of fish, in terms of depth, size and filtration.
Carp
A common name for a variety of fish, many of which are kept in ponds. Carp are constant eaters and produce a lot of waste, which requires regular filtration. They are omnivorous and will eat any pond food.
The Carp family includes Koi, Mirror Carp, and more.
Carp are shoaling fish and should be kept in a group of at least 3 fish.
Common Carp
Wild Common Carp are found in Eastern Europe and Asia. They are a common food fish in many parts of the world, as well as been a popular fish for anglers.
Because Common carp can grow quite large and produce a lot of waste they will require a fairly large garden pond, with depths of at least 1 metre.
