Deep Water Plants

Deep water aquatics make an excellent alternative or addition to lilies. They are more tolerant of shade and moving water but are equally as good at providing surface cover, helping to keep the water clear. They send their stalks up from the bottom of the pond to their leaves and flowers which form a carpet over the pond’s surface. This cluster of vegetation offers great shade to the pond.

Nuphar Lutea: This plant is similar in size to a water lily, but unlike lilies, it thrives in running water. It is quite happy with its leaves completely submerged due to water flow. It will also grow in still water where the leaves will rise to the surface and it will flower.

Aponogeton Distachyos: This prolific flowering plant is very hardy and will bloom for most of the year, even winter. Only when ice damages the flowers and leaves does it stop flowering, but will begin again early the following season, how early will depend upon the weather. For a short period in August when it is hot the leaves will die back, timed perfectly to make room for other plants which will now be in full flower. The Aponogeton distachyos attracts a wide variety of insects throughout the year and although it is delicate and can be damaged in transit, new leaves and flowers grow quickly.
